Korean Cosmetics Samples: What They Cost, How Many Rounds, and When the Fee Is Credited

By Labspire team · · 5 min read

Before you place a production order, you need a formula you love. That means samples. For brand founders working with a Korean manufacturer for the first time, the questions come quickly. How does sampling work? What does a Korean cosmetics manufacturer sample cost? How many rounds will it take, and is the fee ever credited back?

This guide answers those questions in plain terms, explains what is typical in the Korean industry, and shows how sampling works with Labspire, including how to keep your sample cost at zero.

How sample development works with a Korean manufacturer

Sampling is where your idea becomes a real product you can hold, test and judge. With a Korean manufacturing partner, it usually follows the same pattern.

  1. Brief. You share your concept: the product type, who it is for, the texture and feel you want, and any ingredients you are interested in.
  2. Concept to lab sample. The lab chooses a starting formula, adjusts it to your brief and prepares a first lab sample.
  3. Feedback. You test the sample and tell us what to keep and what to change, such as texture, scent, color or finish.
  4. Revision. The formula is adjusted and a new round is prepared.
  5. Approval. Once you are happy, the formula is locked and the project moves on to packaging and production.

You can see how sampling fits into the full project on our process page. If you want a head start, browse our example formulas. Starting from an existing texture often means fewer rounds.

What samples usually cost in Korea

There is no single industry price. As a general range, many Korean OEM/ODM services charge roughly USD 100 to 400 per sample round. Others charge a one-time development fee for a custom formula instead, and some combine both. Shipping may or may not be included.

The range varies with the product type, how custom the formula is, the ingredients involved and the manufacturer's own policies. A simple adjustment to an existing base usually costs less than a formula built from scratch. When you compare offers, ask three questions: what does one round include, is international shipping included, and are the fees credited to a later order?

How many rounds most brands need

Most brands need 2 to 4 sample rounds. Some approve the first sample, while others want to fine-tune texture or scent a few times before they are confident.

Each round takes about 7 business days to prepare, shipping excluded, plus roughly 4 to 7 days for international shipping. Add the time you need to test and reply, and one round can take two to three weeks. Overall, development usually takes 3 to 6 months, depending mostly on how many rounds you need. Our production timeline guide explains how this fits with packaging and production.

The best way to need fewer rounds is a clear brief and focused feedback. Collect all your comments in one message, and be specific: "slightly lighter, absorbs faster, less scent" helps the lab much more than "not quite right".

How to keep sample costs at zero with Labspire

With Labspire, your first sample round is free, and international shipping is included.

Additional rounds can also be free. If you provide a FedEx or DHL account for shipping (charges collect), we prepare additional rounds at no charge and the courier bills your account directly for shipping. Otherwise, each additional round is USD 200, with international shipping included.

For example, a brand that needs three rounds and uses its own courier account pays nothing for sampling. The same brand without a courier account pays USD 400 for rounds two and three.

When sample fees are credited

All sample fees are credited to your first production order. If you paid for additional rounds, that amount comes off your first production invoice, so the money goes toward your product rather than being lost to development.

What to send with your request

The more we know up front, the closer your first sample will be. These are the fields on our sample request form, and why each one helps:

  • Target market. Different markets have different ingredient rules and consumer expectations, so we can choose a suitable base from the start.
  • Brand stage. Whether you are launching your first product or extending a line helps us suggest a realistic path.
  • Desired texture. Gel, cream, lotion, oil or foam is one of the biggest choices in a formula, and naming it early avoids a wasted round.
  • Key ingredients of interest. Actives you want to feature shape the formula and its cost.
  • Scent. Unscented, light or a specific direction. Scent is one of the most common reasons for revisions.
  • Appearance-based target claims. Goals such as a dewy look or a smoother-looking finish help the lab choose the right texture and ingredients.
  • Reference product link. A product you like is often the fastest way to explain feel and finish.
  • Target retail price. This helps us keep ingredients and packaging in a sensible cost range.
  • First order quantity. Quantity affects unit price and planning, so it helps to know it early.
  • Launch timeline. If you have a launch date, we can work backward and tell you when sampling should start.

You do not need every answer. A rough brief is fine, and we reply within 1 business day. Request a sample to get started, or estimate your unit price first if you want to check the numbers.
